The fifth song on Paul and Linda McCartney's 1971 album Ram, Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey was issued as a single in the United States. It became his first post-Beatles number one single. The song was partly inspired by Albert Kendall, who had worked with McCartney's father Jim at Liverpudlian cotton merchants A Hannay & Co. Kendall was a clerk at the business, and subsequently married Jim's sister Milly, making him Paul's uncle Albert.

Paul & Linda McCartney – Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey. HIT September 4, 1971. When the Beatles broke up, did anyone have any inkling, any idea at all, that Paul McCartney would turn out to be the weird one? By the time the band finally spun off into component parts, the personas were firmly in place: John Lennon was the visionary experimentalist, while McCartney was the permanently thirsty pop hack. Ram, McCartney’s second solo album, isn’t really a solo album. Linda was a photographer, not a musician, when she met Paul. But he taught her to play piano, and she sang backing vocals on Ram.

Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is a song by Paul and Linda McCartney from the album Ram. Released in the United States as a single on 2 August 1971, but premiering on WLS the previous week (as a Hit Parade Bound (HPB)), it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on 4 September 1971, making it the first of a string of post-Beatles, McCartney-penned singles to top the US pop chart during the 1970s. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is composed of several unfinished song fragments that McCartney stitched together similar to the medley from the Beatles’ album Abbey Road

We're so sorry, Uncle Albert We're so sorry if we caused you any pain We're so sorry, Uncle Albert But there's no one left at home, and I believe I'm gonna rain. We're so sorry, but we haven't heard a thing all day We're so sorry, Uncle Albert But if anything should happen, we'll be sure to give a ring. human voice imitates telephone ringing).
