Live in New York City is a posthumous live album by English rock musician John Lennon with the Plastic Ono Elephant's Memory Band. It was prepared under the supervision of his widow, Yoko Ono, and released in 1986 as his second official live album, the first being Live Peace in Toronto 1969.

Out concert material was mainly based on the album we released that Spring called Sometime in New York City which was our political statement in songs a la Bertolt Brecht. The concert was filled with love of brotherhood and sisterhood. We passed our tambourines to the audience, true to our slogan "You are the Plastic Ono Band.

During John Lennon's early solo years, he had recorded songs and made public statements about social injustice and the need for world peace, but in New York he became actively involved with political protests. Several of America's best-known left-wing radicals, including Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman, were soon in touch with him, welcoming the support and publicity that his name brought to any cause. In 1972, John and Yoko teamed up with an American rock band called Elephant's Memory to record some protest songs for the album, 'Some Time in New York City', which also featured a bonus LP of live recordings made in England by the Plastic Ono Band in 1969. It was an unsuccessful record, both commercially and critically, and marks the low point of Lennon's post-Beatle recording career.

John Lennon's 1972 album, Some Time in New York City, was a genuine & heartfelt attempt to make pop music meaningful in a way few artists attempt to d. It lost DJ Elliot Mintz his job at his radio station and had TV show host Dick Cavett threatened with the same after John and Yoko played it live on his TV show. Before the Cavett show was aired on 11 May, bosses at the ABC television station had decided to cut the performance of the song from the broadcast, fearing that it might upset some viewers.
