Walter Maynard Ferguson C. M. was a Canadian jazz musician and bandleader. He came to playing in Stan Kentons orchestra before forming his own band in 1957. He was noted for his bands, which served as stepping stones for up-and-coming talent. Ferguson was born in Verdun, encouraged by his mother and father, Maynard was playing piano and violin by the age of four. Newsreel footage exists of Ferguson as a prodigy violinist. For example, in jazz fusion Bandleader-composer Miles Davis album Bitches Brew, producers like Phil Spector and George Martin were soon creating recordings that were, in practical terms, almost impossible to realise in live performance. Producers became creative figures in the studio, other examples of such engineers includes Joe Meek, Teo Macero, Brian Wilson, and Biddu.

Although trumpeter Maynard Ferguson's Roulette recordings are generally considered among his best, a few of the dates (including the music on this LP) were recorded strictly as background music for dancers who were nostalgic for the swing era. Sticking mostly to veteran standards and emphasizing melodic statements (but not recreating the past), Ferguson and his excellent orchestra purposely play it safe, performing pleasing but unadventurous music that is not as exciting as their more jazz-oriented sessions of the era.
