Benny Green, 27 at the time of this CD, is a modern jazz classicist who has absorbed the music of many bop-oriented pianists into his own style. Hearing him play Bobby Timmons' "Dat Dere" makes it easy to believe that Green is a graduate of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.

Benny Green (born April 4, 1963) is an American hard bop jazz pianist who was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. He has been compared to Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson in style and counts them as influences. Green was born in New York City. He grew up in Berkeley, California, and studied classical piano from the age of seven. He also had an interest in jazz from an early point, as his father was a jazz tenor saxophone player

Whether it be a rendition of "See See Rider" (very much in Red Garland's chordal style), the classic bop of Elmo Hope's "Crazy," a tender "I'll Wait and Pray" (one of three unaccompanied solos) or a lazy "Lil' Darlin'," Green plays quite creatively while remaining within the hard bop tradition.
