Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions (also known as simply Carnival of Souls) is the seventeenth studio album by American rock band Kiss, released in 1997. It is the band's final album with lead guitarist Bruce Kulick, as well as their last album with drummer Eric Singer until 2009's Sonic Boom. The album is a departure from the band's classic hard rock style, in favor of a dark and dense grunge-oriented sound. It is also the band's last album of their unmasking era.

Before Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley reunited with Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, they recorded Carnival of Souls with guitarist Bruce Kulick and drummer Eric Singer, intending to release the record either in late 1995 or early 1996. Once the reunion took off, Carnival of Souls was shelved and Kulick and Singer were unceremoniously given their walking papers, the final chapter of their history erased from public record. Unsurprisingly, the unreleased album became a hot bootleg in collector's circles, paving the way for its official release in the fall of 1997

I first noticed Kiss in 1979 at the age of 12. The first album I heard was Destroyer. At first it was the show and the effects that caught my attention. Kiss was different from the other bands - it was enough to look at a picture of them and you immediately knew what they were about. Ever since nothing more unique has come along in this genre. Furthermore, their unusual appearance is complemented by unusually good music. With the release of Creatures Of The Night I've immediately bought every one of their records, and as long as I had them, I learned all the songs

Five years later, KISS released Carnival of Souls. And it was a grunge album. The stylistic change sounds blatantly, completely fake, and the songs are directionless, drab, and the complete anthitesis of what KISS were all about. The first hint of this is given by the cover. It features neither kabuki makeups nor glammed-up pretty boys. Instead, we get four fugly bearded guys, in a washed-out photo, accompanied by generic font, that just screams bootleg. Once we pop the record in, things don’t get much better. KISS were a party-rock band with some decent hard rock riffs and mindless, fun choruses. That’s all their fans wanted from them
