Rondellus hails from Tallinn, Estonia. The band was formed by Maria and Robert Staak in 1993 to perform and promote medieval and renaissance music. All members of the group are professional musicians with years of experience in Estonia's finest early music groups (Hortus Musicus and others). Members: Robert Staak, Tõnu Jõesaar.

Rondellus is an Estonian musical ensemble. After recording several albums of early music on period instruments they recorded Sabbatum: Medieval Tribute to Black Sabbath in the same style having translated the vocals to Latin. "War Pigs" "Verres Militares") Instrumentation: vocals, hurdy-gurdy, organistrum, lute, percussion, fiddle, and harp.

Sabbatum: A Medieval Tribute to Black Sabbath. Sabbatum: A Medieval Tribute to Black Sabbath Tracklist. 1. War Pigs-Verres Militares Lyrics.

The transcendental style of Rondellus Sabbatum evokes Ward's thoughts. In Latin, we hear a new element of Black Sabbath, that was always present in the background. This recording excells many classical recordings that I have, and once again demonstrates the sheer genius of Black Sabbath & Ozzy. Black Sabbath gets the Renaissance treatment, and it works. This album shows a real affection for the original songs. Rondellus unearths a beauty in this stuff that wasn't readily apparent. The Gregorian/madrigal style reminds me of Dead Can Dance's "Aion. When "War Pigs" starts, you might giggle.

Rondellus play a lute, fiddle and harp on these songs and chant the lyrics in Latin, so songs like "War Pigs" and "A National Acrobat" lose all their fury and sound like something the Dalai Lama might get into. Black Sabbath fans are unlikely to dig music as extremely mellow as this, though the album could serve as okay background music for yoga or a massage.

Estonian music quintet Rondellus have here arranged 12 Ozzy-era Sabbath songs for authentic medieval instruments (harp, fiddle, organistrum, psaltery, bagpipe, lute, etc) translated them into Latin and delivered them in haunting plainsong. It is an extraordinary accomplishment, each song completely and convincingly reinvented and performed with spirit and conviction, far from the "Paranoid" with panpipes facade I feared when I first heard of the venture.
