A huge misstep, Lupe Fiasco's new LP simply sounds bad, playing against every single one of his strengths and creating new weaknesses. One of the few things more depressing than actually listening to Lupe Fiasco's new album, Lasers, is imagining the monumentally emasculating studio sessions it took to make it. It's easy for label heads to see the commercial success of arena-rap like "Empire State of Mind" and "Love the Way You Lie" - or crossover debuts such as Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday and .

Despite the achievements and momentum, Lupe Fiasco - a reluctant industry cog from the beginning - encountered several snags and had to make substantial artistic compromises prior to having Atlantic allow the long-delayed release of his third album

Lupe Fiasco has talked about retiring after the mawkish Lasers. Sounds to us like he’s already in Boca, rushing to make the early-bird special. Photograph: Andrew Zaeh Lupe Fiasco. By Brent DiCrescenzo Posted: Tuesday March 22 2011. Beautiful Lasers even features a wanky, mullet-haired guitar solo that Mannheim Steamroller would sniff at. It’s bizarre how Lupe ducks out for a Champagne break whenever his verses finish, handing the mic to some hack Akon clone like MDMA (who is far more tackily commercial than mind-altering. How about QVC for a moniker, perhaps?). Frankly, Lupe feels like the guest on his own songs.

Album · 2011 · 12 Songs. Back in the mid-'00s, Lupe Fiasco struck a nerve with his fashion-forward style, matched with cheeky verses and ear-tickling, loop-driven productions. Lasers (an acronym for Love Always Shines Everytime Remember 2 Smile) marks his 2011 return. The best joints here are the string-laced, Afro-centric anthem "All Black Everything," ridiculously catchy "Coming Up" featuring MDMA, and "Words I Never Said" with Skylar Grey.
