Lyrics to "California Bloodlines" song by John Stewart: Had I been born in New York City A New York City girl I'd know Workin' in the concrete, not the . California Bloodlines" lyrics provided for educational purposes and personal use only.

California Bloodlines is the second album by folk musician John Stewart, former member of the Kingston Trio. It was named by Rolling Stone as of one of the 200 best albums of all time. The album, which was considered by many to be his signature album, was recorded in Nashville. Stewart used some of the same musicians that recorded on Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline, which was recorded at the same studio.

That's debatable, but it is a hell of an album. Stewart, who had finally left behind the Kingston Trio to pursue a solo career, solidified it here. Well known as the guy who wrote "Daydream Believer" for the Monkees, Stewart proved to be a credible, sometimes even enigmatic performer in his own right. Nick Venet produced California Bloodlines.

California Bloodlines was John Stewart’s first true solo disc. Recorded and released in 1969, Stewart used many of the same musicians as Dylan did for Nashville Skyline. As expected this disc is much more rustic and country influenced than his work with either Buffy Ford or the Kingston Trio. Regardless, this is a must own for fans of authentic American music. It took me several spins and a few hours in deep thought to finally come to terms with this classic. John Stewart’s quivering, thin Johnny Cash-like vocals threw me off at first but now I see why many rate California Bloodlines as one.

The sound this album has is honestly underappreciated. To me, a 24-year-old modern listener, it gives these nostalgic vibes for a time I've only known thru media and the occasional thrift store find. Like a foggy memory that you can usually only recall in the back of your head, but becomes clearer, if a lil hazy, in your dreams. A family 8mm film where everyone is either too young to recognize, or died before you were born. Its rough and lo-fi, which, when joined by the clicks n pops of playing it on vinyl sounds like the musical equivalent of the patina on a cheeseburger wingadinga boomer's mid-century Chevy truck. Obviously aged, and long-since obsolete by modern standards, but with a beauty all its own for those who dare to look where others turn up their noses. It calls to mind images of smoking pot in wood-paneled basement rec rooms complete with deep green shag carpeting and a fully stocked tiki bar while the melodies of perhaps Tom Rush or Phil Ochs drift thru the air from the hi-fi console against the wall. Perhaps these images were never real in the first place, perhaps they are merely an idealized version of a slower-paced time that I would love to see or visit, but could never live in for fear of being killed for my queerness.Either way, its a beautiful album, especially, in my opinion, "Lonesome Picker". The 1970 Glenn Yarbrough cover of this song is also very hauntingly beautiful in its own right. I actually found Yarbrough's version first a few years back, right around the time he passed away, ironically enough.

Understated, under-rated country/folk singer-songwriter masterpiece from 1969. From former Kingston Trio member John Stewart, this album was quietly highly influential.

This is the one with a green label and barcode on the back, yeah?

California Bloodlines is one of my favorite albums of all time. The enthusiasm and honesty of John's songs is palpable and it is very obvious that the Nashville session players were really enthused as well. I bought this on vinyl when it came out and also have it on CD as my favorite sing-along road albums (I generally only sing along when alone, though). I have just about everything John Stewart recorded, but this album really can't be beat.
