The band promoted the album with a series of tours.
Metallica were easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s and '90s. Responsible for bringing the genre back to Earth, the bandmates looked and talked like they were from the street, shunning the usual rock star games of metal musicians during the mid-'80s pop-metal renaissance. Metallica also expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions
In retrospect, Metallica is a good, but not quite great, album, one whose best moments deservedly captured the heavy metal crown, but whose approach also foreshadowed a creative decline.
Metallica’s fifth, self-titled album, has a mostly black cover (aside from the band name and a coiled snake in gray), leading to its common nickname ‘'The Black Album’‘. It became the band’s best-selling work, starting a streak of albums and really breaking Metallica into the mainstream. The Black Album or Metallica - Album Art" Track Info. I hate Metallica's Black Album, and frankly I can't for the life of me understand why so many other Metallica fans are ready to fellate the supposed genius of the sixty-two minute beast of repetition, limp-wristedness, and flat ideas. This album was to be the gateway to some of the worst music ever to fall under the title 'metal', or to ever be referred to by the band as 'experimental', 'mature', and 'progressive'.
