Every Wooden Wand album trounces expectations, and Blood Oaths Of The New Blues, thankfully, doesn't break that trend. Many of the musicians on Briarwood return here, making this the only solo Wooden Wand album to feature the same consecutive players and the first Wooden Wand solo album to be recorded in the same consecutive studio (Ol Elegante in Homewood, AL) as the previous album, somewhere along the line Wooden Wand became a BAND

A tale of wrongful execution sits easily in amongst a song about a blues festival and a tribute to experimental musician Jhonn Balance. However, the album's first half is long-winded, with an eleven-minute opener that feels both badly placed and lacking in focus. If this were cut to EP length, it would be fantastic. As it stands it is still a pleasurable, if self-indulgent, listen.

Wooden Wand's collaborations have been nearly as wandering and nomadic as Toth himself, a New York native who attended Purchase College before relocating to Knoxville, Tennessee, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and most recently Lexington, Kentucky. In January 2013, Fire Records in the UK released Wooden Wand's latest record Blood Oaths of the New Blues, which was the second album recorded with the Briarwood Virgins band in Birmingham in February 2012.
