Earth and Fire were a Dutch progressive and symphonic rock band who over time evolved into a pop group. Formed in the Netherlands by twin brothers Chris and Gerard Koerts, and most popular in the 1970s when fronted by singer Jerney Kaagman, Earth and Fire had many chart topping hits in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe, though they never gained much popularity in England or the Americas.

Bands have to start somewhere, and Earth & Fire started off as a Dutch beat group with psychedelic overtones. In fact they were more of a single-oriented act who quickly discovered they can also do the album market, as albums like Song of the Marching Children and Atlantis can attest to. This 1970 debut was first released on Polydor/Medium with the matchbook cover that folds open like a matchbook. In 1971 the album was released in the UK on the Nepentha label with the Roger Dean cover, and many people ended up more familiar with this cover when it was reissued on CD, as the original Nepentha LP is considerably rarer than the Dutch Polydor version. This shows a more rough and unpolished Earth & Fire, with several songs released as singles, some of them released prior to the album's release. Seasons", in fact, was their very first single that was released at the end of 1969.

Earth and Fire is such a wonderful Dutch prog band and it is a shame that they are so overlooked. I personally find the combination of the excellent voice of female vocalist Jerney Kaagman, extensive use of the mellotron (with string setting), and haunting melodies irresistible. The pieces on this 1971 album range from the psychedelic pop of the 2'46 Carnival of the Animals to the proggy Song of the Marching Children suite, which reaches approximately 18 minutes in length  . Earth & Fire contains a similar magical, dream-like atmosphere on their early albums, especially evident on Song of the Marching Children.
