Lyrics: Stakes is high, you know them stakes is high The Instamatic focal point bringing damage to your boroughs Be some brothers from the east with some beats that be thorough Got . Benny the Butcher - Crowns for Kings Ft.

Following the limited release of their Clear Lake Auditorium EP in 1994, De La Soul’s fourth album, Stakes Is High, was released in 1996 and continued the sound shift from their previous album, 1993’s Buhloone Mindstate. Prince Paul didn’t contribute to the production of this album, but De La Soul handled the bulk of the production along with contributions from Spearhead X, Skeff Anselm, DJ Ogee, and Jay Dee . J Dilla, who produced the album’s lead single, the title track Stakes Is High. The album shines a light on the state of the hip-hop industry through the songs and interludes.

Stakes Is High" is a single by De La Soul released in 1996 from their album Stakes Is High. was a relentless attack on what De La saw as a decline, not only in hip hop music, but also in hip hop culture.

But it's under these conditions that De La offered an album that was not only sonically excellent and creative and pure, but an album with the year's most relevant and prescient message. The stakes were indeed high.

Tracks on the bonus disc are slightly different remixes from the original album versions. Matrix, Runout (Disc 1): D31609 SMA 19461R. Matrix, Runout (Disc 2): PRD 96/66 SMA 19759. Other Versions (5 of 29) View All. Cat.

Stakes Is high was De La Soul’s first album to not be produced be Prince Paul. Rather than having Prince Paul, a professional producer, produce the album De La Soul decided to take a crack at producing themselves. Regrettably, it did not turn out well. The production was noticeably sketchy on all tracks and the sad thing is some better production could have provided the zest this album so desperately needs. In summary, this CD has overall decent lyrics, is not memorable, has little to no playback value, a lot of filler, no really memorable tracks and lacking production. It’s a classic example.
