Blue Note Records is an American jazz record label that is owned by Universal Music Group and operated with Decca Records. Established in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Max Margulis, it derives its name from the blue notes of jazz and the blues. Originally dedicated to recording traditional jazz and small group swing, from 1947 the label began to switch its attention to modern jazz.

Jazz pianist Thelonious Monk's first sessions as a bandleader were recorded between 1947 and 1952, and released on Blue Note records as a series of 78 RPM singles. These singles were then compiled in later years-with additional performances from the sessions-into long-playing album formats. As Monk's reputation and fame grew, the sessions were recompiled again and again into more complete configurations. This article details various releases of these sessions.

Blue Note is an iconic jazz label, so it only makes sense to put together a list of the greatest Blue Note albums. Find out what’s on our list here. Blue Note Records are designed simply to serve the uncompromising expressions of hot jazz or swing, in general. Agreed, Saxophone Colossus is a great album, one of the all-time classics; however it was not made for Blue Note, but for Prestige, if I remember correctly.

The earliest Blue Note recordings were issued on 78 rpm shellac or 10″ microgroove, largely the domain of the purist collector, as many of these recording (though not all) went on to be republished in various permutations on 12″ LP. This Guide commences in 1956, with the 12″ 1500 series microgroove vinyl LP, which I consider the beginning of modern high fidelity and which coincides with the beginning of use of then new condenser/valve microphones. A combination of the record label variety, and engravings in the run-out groove (some refer to it as the dead wax or trail off) – the vinyl land between the end of the music grooves and the label – will enable you to decide if a record is a first pressing, a later pressing though still an original Blue Note (pre-1966), or a reissue originating in the subsequent decades of Blue Note ownership by other companies.

As we come to the end of the Blue Note Records 75th Anniversary celebrations, we wanted to take a moment to reflect back upon this incredible year. From 1939 to 2014, the legacy of Blue Note Records was celebrated far and wide this year. On January 8, pianists Jason Moran & Robert Glasper paid tribute to that first session with an unforgettable set of piano duets at Town Hall as part of NYC Winter Jazzfest. Throughout the year festivals across the world including NYC’s Central Park Summerstage, Monterey Jazz Festival, Portland’s PDX Jazz, EFG London Jazz Festival, and the dedicated Blue Note Festival in Paris celebrated our 75th birthday.
