It was first released on 29 November 1999 in France and later it was released worldwide in 2000. The album features the hit singles "I Will Love Again", "I Am Who I Am" and "Love by Grace". After the Francophone star's huge success, in 1998 and 1999, Lara went to New York City and San Francisco to record her first album in English.

Although album opener, Regular, possesses the striking opening statement of Potential, the track as a whole feels static and cumbersome and is non-representative of many of the exciting and dynamic compositions found on the rest of the record. Superimpose also acts as the real misstep. A misguided pastiche of 90s R&B that renders its vocal sample obsolete. Potential is intrinsically a human record. It deals with stories, emotions and the grander concepts of the human condition with a poise that should be greatly commended

Potential has a kitsch value that might endanger the appreciation of the whole, if not for the whole's otherwise brilliance: the vast majority of the vocal samples on the album are pulled from the depths of Youtube.
