The division of human rights into three generations was initially proposed in 1979 by the Czech jurist Karel Vasak at the International Institute of Human Rights in Strasbourg. He used the term at least as early as November 1977. Vasak's theories have primarily taken root in European law. His divisions follow the three watchwords of the French Revolution: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.

This division of human rights into three generations was introduced in 1979 by Czech jurist Karel Vasak. The three categories align with the three tenets of the French Revolution: liberty, equality, and fraternity. First-generation, civil-political rights deal with liberty and participation in political life. Although the three generations framework is a valuable conceptual tool for thinking about rights, it is worth questioning some of its assumptions. Does the notion of a progression of rights and the metaphor of age it is based on make sense?

From the generations of rights only a part was defined as human rights. After a socio-legal criterion, the latter are different from the other subjective rights for two reasons: 1. they are fundamental rights, absolutely essential for human beings, as individuals or members of a community, rights recognized at an international level; 2. secondly, these are models destined to convince, lacking any sanction, enjoying approval and spontaneous support, motivated by ethical values.

Generations can be confusing. This page is dedicated to answering common questions about generations and to give context to bigger generational conversation. The Center for Generational Kinetics solves tough generational challenges with iGen, Millennials, Gen Y, Gen X and Baby Boomers. People in this birth cohort exhibit similar characteristics, preferences, and values over their lifetimes. At The Center for Generational Kinetics, we believe that generations are not a box; instead, they are powerful clues showing where to begin connecting with and influencing people of different ages. There are big differences between the generations and it's important to know the years when each generation begins and ends.
