The Ottoman Empire, historically known in Western Europe as the Turkish Empire or simply Turkey, was a state that controlled much of Southeast Europe, Western Asia and North Africa between the 14th and early 20th centuries
The Ottoman Empire was seen by the Europeans through an Orientalist lens, by which the West was viewed as the place of modernity and progress, while the East was seen as backwards. At the cusp of the nineteenth century, the Ottoman Empire, once renowned in European circles as a source of major power, now posed a rather different threat; by what means, could the Ottoman Empire be dismantled, without causing the major European Powers to resort to war. This was, in essence, ‘The Eastern Question’. By this time the Eastern Question involved the countries of Britain, France, Russia and Germany
The Ottoman Empire used a variety of flags, especially as naval ensigns, during its history. The star and crescent came into use in the second half of the 18th century. In 1844, a version of this flag, with a five-pointed star, was officially adopted as the Ottoman national flag

The Ottoman Empire was an empire which lasted from 27 July 1299 to 1 November 1922 (623 years), when the Sultanate was abolished. The Ottoman Empire was one of the lasting empires in history; such that the Ottoman State, its politics, conflicts, and cultural heritage in a vast geography provide one of the longest continuous narratives.

Ottoman Empire: Ottoman Empire, empire created by Turkish tribes that grew to be one of the most powerful states in the world in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Ottoman period spanned more than 600 years and came to an end only in 1922, when it was replaced by the Turkish Republic and various successor states in southeastern Europe and the Middle East. At its height the empire encompassed most of southeastern Europe to the gates of Vienna, including present-day Hungary, the Balkan region, Greece, and parts of Ukraine; portions of the Middle East now occupied by Iraq, Syria, Israel, and Egypt; North Africa as far west as Algeria; and large parts of the Arabian Peninsula.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, at the height of its power under the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottoman Empire was a multinational, multilingual empire controlling much of Southeast Europe, parts of Central Europe, Western Asia, the Caucasus, North Africa, and the Horn of Africa. At the beginning of the 17th century, the empire contained 32 provinces.
