L'Age d'Or (French: L'Âge d'Or, pronounced ), commonly translated as The Golden Age or Age of Gold, is a 1930 French surrealist satirical comedy film directed by Luis Buñuel about the insanities of modern life, the hypocrisy of the sexual mores of bourgeois society and the value system of the Roman Catholic Church. The screenplay is by Salvador Dalí and Buñuel. L'Age d'Or was one of the first sound films made in France, along with Miss Europe and Under the Roofs of Paris.

First off, a word about the tracks on this CD. The studio stuff will blow your socks off, or you'll hate it, depending on your taste. There are also several badly recorded live tracks sandwiched in the middle of the studio tracks, which tend to bring a screeching halt to the proceedings, which is unfortunate. Those tracks should never have been included, or should have been tagged on at the end, NOT in the middle. Now, about the band. There has probably never been a band quite like Metal Urbain. Screeching guitars, grinding and squealing synthesizers, a rhythm machine instead of a drummer, and a singer that made Johnny Rotten sound like a little girl. They do sound quite angry, actually. For the time, and for the style of music, which is DEFINITELY punk, despite the instrumentation, they were FAR ahead of their peers in almost every way. Sadly, they were also very short-lived, although some kind of reunion album was released in the last few years, but I've yet to hear it (mainly due to high prices). The songs are all in French, so no luck with deciphering lyrics, although they are in the booklet for the CD, but unless you speak French, you're out of luck. But who really CARES? I've been listening to them since 1978 when I first came across a couple of singles and I still take out the CD & take it in the car with me when I want to race down Kentucky backroads, screaming at the top of my lungs along with lyrics that I can't understand. It's great stuff for when I'd like a sore throat. Pop Poubelle begins with almost twangy & melodic guitar, before the synthesizers kick in and rip everthing to shreds, although the twangy guitar is back for a solo worthy of a beach party movie, but maybe not on THIS planet. Other standout songs are Numero Zero, Atlantis, Ghetto, and E 202. For the most part Metal Urbain doesn't stray too far from the "three chord" rule of punk, but the chords they choose and the instrumentation are what make them stand above all other bands of the time, and many right up through today. Another sadly unknown band that deserved more recognition than they got.
