During the period in which these three cantatas were written, Bach was making extensive use of compositions by others, such as his own second cousin Johann Ludwig Bach. In several instances, Bach also reused texts set by his cousin, including the first two cantatas here, the opening text of each being taken from the Old and the New Testament. The programme closes with a movement for solo violin and orchestra, thought.

Johann Sebastian Bach was baptized at Eisenach on the 23rd of March 1685. His parents died in his tenth year, and his elder brother, Johann Christoph, organist at Ohrdruf, took charge of him and taught him music. Except for practical difficulties (as when Bach writes for obsolete instruments) the only reason why some cantatas are better known than others is that a beginning must be made somewhere. It is clear, then, that the influence of Bach's art as an understood whole is still undeveloped.

Bach – Cantatas, Vo. 5. Bach, Johann Sebastian. During the period from which these three cantatas come, Bach no longer presented a new cantata of his own every Sunday. Instead he made extensive use of compositions by others, including his own second cousin Johann Ludwig Bach, court composer at Meiningen. In several instances, Bach also reused texts set by Johann Ludwig for his own compositions, including two of the cantatas here, Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot and Es wartet alles auf dich.
