Hugh Alan Cornwell (born 28 August 1949) is an English musician and singer-songwriter, best known for being the vocalist and guitarist for the punk rock/new wave band the Stranglers from 1974 to 1990. Cornwell grew up in Tufnell Park and Kentish Town and attended William Ellis School in Highgate, where he played bass in a band with Richard Thompson, later a member of Fairport Convention.

Those who had a hard time warming up to the Stranglers because of that band's unsure way with a melody will still find Cornwell's writing somewhat dry, but these days he makes up for it with sheer energetic tightness.
