Description

Far from funereal, Pillars of Ash has plenty of love for good ol' heavy-metal melodies.

Pillars of Ash for all its punk roots is still a heavy metal album at heart though with some storming head-banging tracks to really sink your teeth into. Inspiration from some of the big thrash metal bands is clear (Born of Strife has a little bit of Slayer about it) but it’s more of a gentle nod & not just straight up ripping them off. Walk Among the Sky coming at the latter end of the album is worth multiple listens if only the subject matter (death reimagined) while Punkout shows of the bands punkier edge.

Pillars of Ash, then, should be considered Black Tusk’s latest album first, tribute second: this is not a somber funeral, but a joyous wake, not to mention the band’s strongest album yet. Pillars of Ash doesn’t alter the formula of the past two albums, but rather accentuates them with doubled-up aggression; slip on a pair of headphones for the album’s 35-minute duration, and your ears’ll be ringing for an equally long period of time

The Motö, Savannah, Georgia-based stoner/sludge/punk metal unit's much anticipated sophomore studio outing, Pillars of Ash is a straight-up haymaker of an album; an oil-stained middle finger rising out of the brackish water of a swamp forest. The last Black Tusk offering to feature bass player Jonathan Athon, who passed away in November 2014 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident, the 11-track set is both workmanlike and punitive, and its charms are rank and crust-lined.
