The Document plays like a Thanksgiving dinner. The listener begins eager, hungry, waiting to try every dish. By the end, Smith finds his audience stuffed and thoroughly satisfied. The debut of DJ Andy Smith, Portishead's touring deejay, is indeed quite fulfilling. it's more of a really well done mix tape than anything else. He starts off with some underground hip-hop stuff, and then moves to some funk and slows it down a little bit throughout the end. This album is amazing, the fast drum beat is consistent throughout the entire thing, and Andy Smith demonstrates his ability to mix fast and slow songs smoothly. Definitely not background music.

The Document II is much heavier on the hip-hop and funk side which makes for a more enjoyable mix for listeners that weren’t really feeling the classic rock aspects of the first mix. Blending classic tunes from Black Sheep, Ultramagnetic MCs and Eric B & Rakim with the smooth soulful sounds of the Quantic Soul Orchestra, James Brown and Sugarman 3 simply can’t fail, especially when it’s done as well as this. With no new Portishead record on the radar, it’s nice to see that Andy Smith has been keeping himself busy with something that might give him more name recognition in the DJ community.
