Play: The B Sides is a compilation album by American electronica musician Moby. It was released on October 24, 2000. The album's songs are outtakes from his 1999 album Play which were subsequently released as B-sides across various singles from the album. Moby explains: "The B Sides is a collection of songs that weren't quite appropriate for Play, but that I still love enough to release as B-sides.

Play is the fifth studio album by American electronica musician Moby. It was released on May 17, 1999 by Mute and V2 Records. Recording of the album began in mid-1997, following the release of his fourth album, Animal Rights (1996), which deviated from Moby's electronica style; his goal for Play was to return to this style of music. Originally intended to be his final record, the recording of the album took place at Moby's home studio in Manhattan, New York.

It was said many times: Play is a unique album. The rights for all 17 tracks were acquired by TV producers, advertisers and film-makers. Now this album is honoured with golden epithets and branches of the laurel, but after the failure of a punk-album Animal rights Moby didn’t know what to think. He received respect from rock monsters, and he turned away from his former ient audience. He planned to record his last album, retire and study architecture. And Play was supposed to be his swansong. Together with his manager he went to different labels hoping to at least get close to the sales of Everything is wrong, Moby’s most successful album at the time selling 250 000 copies. Play surpassed 10 million

Notes

Although this is entitled "Play: The Outtakes" it contains 3 B-Sides from That's When I Reach For My Revolver: Lovesick, Displaced & Sway.

Nevertheless the B-Side collection from Play is not complete without Arp (from Bodyrock), Running (from Run On) & Down Slow (Full Length Version) (from Run On (Extended)) missing.

Tracks 1-1, 1-2, 1-4, 1-7, and tracks 2-3, 2-4, 2-6, 2-7 are unreleased demo, recorded from 'Play' session.
Track 2-2 is Graciosa (Long Version), the unreleased version from Senseless - Music From The Dimension Motion Picture
Track 2-5 is 'Spirit', incorrectly given as 'Spirit 2' on the back insert.

Some of the songs on this album should've been included on Play e.g. Brothers On The Corners etc.

This is a bootleg; I'm not sure who got the tapes but there was no possibility of Warner ever releasing these tracks in this form— I believe the history behind this was that there were a number of potential B-sides, and the disc was passed around as "Moby: Non LP tracks", as a potential pool for B-sides. Someone came along and added some demo recordings they found (there were a lot circulating on early p2p networks in the late 90s), plus some B-sides, and made an imitation cover to make it look like it would stand along side Play and Play: The B Sides.

I got this from a friend at Warner Australia. It was not a bootleg, and as someone earlier stated, it was produced for licensing non album tracks. This was done often by Warner-Chappell and the cds produced for this purpose were done very cheaply using CD-R and low quality inserts. This one is a single page insert that used the Play cover photo. The back cover had contact details for Warner Chappell

I understand your comment, as these tracks, apart from the Revolver b-sides, would never get issued by Warners, but you're wrong about why their name is here. They were Moby's publisher at the time, and these discs are examples of internal CDs distributed to promote their recordings for publishing use. If someone wanted to use one of these songs in a commercial or film, they'd check out this disc and call the publisher. At the time, as EVERY song on Play had been licensed for some alternate commercial purpose (soundtrack, commercial, event, etc.) it shouldn't be surprising that Moby's publisher would try to push the rest of the tracks in hopes they'd get licensed, and then everyone would get paid, at least in theory. As for the album/bootleg cover, not sure about it. Warner publishing didn't usually make unique covers for their CDs, and this cover looks more bootleg than legit.

This is absolutely not a bootleg - I was given one by a Warner Bros. employee, it was made for publishing/licensing purposes. It was not intended for official release, but that does not mean it is a bootleg. He considers it a promo. If you would like more information you're welcome to contact me.
