Maritime's Glass Floor was nothing to write home about, and didn't hold out any hope for great things to come either. The prospect of a band comprised of two ex-Promise Ringers (Davey von Bohlen, Dan Didier) and Dismemberment Plan's virtuosic bassist, Eric Axelson, was at least one-third exciting. This is still post-emo indie-pop, and some listeners have no patience with the genre no matter how well-turned. But for what it's worth, We, the Vehicles is post-emo indie-pop at its finest. Davey von Bohlen, no longer lisping and puling, has developed a confident, nuanced and- gosh, almost adult?- singing style that makes you want to drop the diminutive and start calling him "Dave
This is a band who abolishes any pre-concieved notion of what makes an album unique. Almost the complete opposite, consiquently having somethi. The artistic adventure begins with the album's first track Calm Singer/guitarist Davey Von Bohlen recites without hesitation the feeling that with a little time to recover we can make it through any of lifes problems. With soaring guitars that seam to pan in and out on an electronic cue, and a driving percussion section that accents Von Bohlen's warm vocal tone, we are left with nothing more than optimism for what is to come.
If anything, the album might be slightly too slick, in much the same way that Death Cab for Cutie's Plans smoothed out a few too many of the group's quirks; it's not until "German Engineering," the third-from-last tune on this brief album, that vonBohlen sings in the familiar high-pitched whine (in the best possible sense of the. word) that was his vocal trademark in the Promise Ring. Still, the songwriting is strong enough and the arrangements appealing enough that We, the Vehicles has a quiet pop charm all its own. Track Listing.

Second album from the collective of Davey von Bohlen, Dan Didier (of Promise Ring) and Eric Axelson (of Dismemberment Plan) is a triumphant realization of the unlabored goal of Maritime and an occasional turn toward the darker denser corners of years past. The band remains solidly tethered to pop perfection, but has taken the space to let that pop cycle through all its permutations. Maritime may have a collective history to both cling to and run from, but with this album, the band steps forcefully into its own. Flameshovel.
