Description

The Lion Roars ‎(Cass, Album).

Consumer Guide Album. Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens: The Lion Roars for his supper ("Masole A Banana," "Amaqhawe Omgqashiyo") .

Music video to one of the group's hit songs, "Mbaqanga", from 1991.

A comeback album of sorts for the Mahotella Queens, who had more or less recently come out of retirement (actually a few years prior). Here, they team with Mahlathini, the king of groaners (and their usual cohort). Production is covered by Marks Mankswane, a guitarist and leader of the Makgona Tsohle Band, who generally backs both Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens, as well as separate albums for the band themselves. For fans of Mahlathini, the King of the Groaners album on Earthworks may be better-suited (though the backing vocalists there are not the Mahotella Queens).

The supergroup – Mahlathini, the Mahotella Queens and Makgona Tsohle – were an extremely productive and popular cohesive team until 1972. In 1972 the line-up disintegrated after royalty disagreements with Bopape. The Mahotella Queens under the production of Makgona Tsohle Band guitarist Marks Mankwane, continued to record and perform to some degree of success throughout into the 1970s and 1980s, but by the late 1970s due to royalty disagreements and/or family commitments, none of the original members of the Queens remained

Mahlathini & The Mahotella Queens. Overview (current section). Mahlathini, the Queens and the Makgona Tsohle Band had become famous as individual artists, but had frequently recorded together since 1964. It was only in 1986, when the demand for South African music arose through Paul Simon's Graceland album, that Gallo Record Company (the three artists' label) paired them together permanently.
