Using the textured sonics of The Unforgettable Fire as a basis, U2 expanded those innovations by scaling back the songs to a personal setting and adding a grittier attack for its follow-up, The Joshua Tree. It's a move that returns them to the sweeping, anthemic rock of War, but if War was an exploding political bomb, The Joshua Tree is a journey through its aftermath, trying to find sense and hope in the desperation.
About The Joshua Tree. Even following 1984’s The Unforgettable Fire, few could have guessed that U2 would drop one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Released on 9 March, 1987, The Joshua Tree was a record concerned with the state of America. The eleven tracks within were informed by personal tragedy, political upheaval and Bono’s own experiences volunteering in South America. It’s no surprise that the album went on to win Album of the Year at the 1988 Annual Grammy Awards. It remains to this day one of the highest-selling albums of all time, shipping over 25 million copies. In 2014, the Library of Congress selected the album for preservation as a culturally, historically or aesthetically significant work. The Joshua Tree Q&A.

The Joshua Tree was a culmination of everything the Irish foursome had been working toward since the late ‘70s. Pre-Tree, U2 had enjoyed considerable success in the United States, particularly as a live act. As their spiky post-punk grew artsier and more arena-worthy, the onetime Joy Division super fans became increasingly fascinated with America. The resulting mix of European and Yankee sensibilities fertilized The Joshua Tree. The album is heavily front-loaded, but beyond that opening triptych of timeless radio staples, The Joshua Tree is mostly filler-free and packed with everything people love or hate about U2. For starters, it’s got three of their best political songs. Red Hill Mining Town is a coal-fired rocker about hanging on to hope during the 1984 British miners strike.
