Tons of Sobs is the debut album by English blues rock band Free, released in the UK on 14 March 1969. While the album failed to chart in the UK, it did reach in the US. Free are cited as one of the definitive bands of the British blues boom of the late 1960s even though this is the only album of their canon that can strictly be called blues rock. According to bass player Andy Fraser, the title effectively summed up the album.

Even at its most commercial ("I'm a Mover" and "Worry"), Tons of Sobs has a density that makes Zeppelin and the rest of the era's rock contemporaries sound like flyweights by comparison. The title of the album does not relate directly to the content of the album; it is possibly oblique reference to the darker, more sombre moments.

Tons Of Sobs, Free’s debut album, was released in all of 51 years ago. No UK single was released from it, and that was hardly a surprise – I’m A Mover, performed at a slow, steady yet relentless pace, exuded a menace that had no place on Top Of The Pops. Not until All Right Now in summer 1970 would Free be recognised by the fickle chart audience. With Led Zeppelin’s career also taking off, this period was developing into a prime-time one for album bands. Most first albums represent their performers’ stage act, an. obs was no exception. Tons Of Sobs isn’t a bad album by any means. I just feel like Free hadn’t yet found their unique sound. It’s amazing to think they had it down within a year and were kaput within four.
