The Country of Blinds, Learn to Talk, 2006. Skeleton Crew - Factory Song. Album: The Country of Blinds, Learn to Talk, 2006. From LP "Learn to Talk" - 1984 Fred Frith & Tom Cora. Some things don't wind up sounding like you'd expect, which is just as well.
Skeleton Crew chronology. Learn to Talk, Country of Blinds (1990). Skeleton Crew was a United States experimental rock and jazz group formed in 1982. They originally consisted of English guitarist Fred Frith and American cellist Tom Cora, with American harpist and keyboardist Zeena Parkins joining later Frith later used Cora's cello samples on Etymology in "Traffic Continues II: Gusto", an e. .Recorded at Koeinverhuurbdrijf Studio, Purmerland, The Netherlands in 1995.
Skeleton Crew, a collaboration with Tom Cora from 1982 to 1986, was an experimental group noted for its live improvisations where Frith (guitar, violin, keyboards, drums) and Cora (cello, bass guitar, homemade drums and contraptions) played a number of instruments simultaneously. They performed extensively across Europe, North America and Japan and released Learn to Talk in 1984. Zeena Parkins (electric harp and keyboards) joined in 1984 and the trio released The Country of Blinds in 1986
Skeleton Crew, 1982 Left to right: Tom Cora, Dave Newhouse, Fred Frith. Background information. agreeing to play all the instruments on stage themselves Performing like this was a challenge for them and made the resulting music unpredictable, but as an improvising duo, this pleased them. Later in 1984, Skeleton Crew began work on their first studio album Learn to Talk in Switzerland. The LP (with sides named "Side Free" and "Side Dirt") featured music that was both sparse and raw and consisted of cynical and humorous "songs" interspaced with cello, guitar and violin instrumental fragments. It conveyed the energy of their live performances.
Skeleton Crew 1982-1986 Fred Frith, Tom Cora 19 shows. hope you guys will enjoy! (all the details for each show are in text files. Maybe you could recommend some with the best sound quality ? Anyway thanks 19 times. PS : I think there are not only Fred Frith and Tom Cora in the line up, but also Dave Newhouse (ex Muffins) on some of the oldest shows, and, I guess, Zeena Parkins on the most recent.
An extension of the anti-Reagan imperialist songs on Fred Frith's Cheap at Half the Price, Skeleton Crew's debut appeared at the height of the president's popularity. But as with a lot of Frith projects, it wears it anger on the same sleeve as its mordant humor. There's a bitter dissection of Sousa's "Washington Post" and the tongue-in-cheek "Learn to Talk" ("Your friends will be amazed," Frith sings, "so just complain about what you don't know"). Tom Cora fleshes out the sound with home made drums and "contraptions" and soaring, jagged, stuttering cello work. The whole things ends on a happy calypso jam, sending us out smiling, though we don't know if we should.
