Marty Haggard was born June 18, 1958, in Bakersfield, California. He was named after Marty Robbins. At the time that Marty Haggard was born, his father, Merle Haggard, was serving time in San Quentin State Prison.

Marty was born and raised in Bakersfield, California nger/songwriter ever. In 1979, Marty began touring with his own band, then in 1981 signed with Dimension Records and released the single Charleston Cotton Mill, which spent three weeks on the Hot Country Songs charts in 1981. At his father’s request, Marty joined his dad’s road band, in which he sang harmony and played rhythm guitar, from 1982 to 1984. The song and video of Here in the Afterlife was released, followed by Amnesia.
