Philadelphia horn-blower Lee Morgan had been with Blue Note Records for almost nine years when he recorded Cornbread, his 12th album for the label, in a single session held on Saturday, 18 September 1965. Listen to Cornbread right now. Originally from Philadelphia, Morgan was a d trumpet prodigy who made his debut recording at the tender age of 18 for Alfred Lion’s famous label, on 4 November 1956. Cornbread’s nine-minute-long title track was the first of four songs composed by the trumpeter on the album. It was driven by a boogaloo-style groove created by Ridley, Higgins and Hancock that had been the salient feature of ‘The Sidewinder’.

Tom Cat is an album by Lee Morgan recorded in 1964, though only issued in 1980. It was originally released as LT 1058. While lesser known in comparison to The Sidewinder and other albums, it features several of Morgan's contemporary Blue Note recording artists such as McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey, and Jackie McLean.

I do agree with those who point out Morgan's excellent composing skills and the diversity of tunes on this album. The diversity along with many vibrant solos are what make this album so great. But I think "Cornbread" is better than any of these. The title song "Cornbread", like "Sidewinder" (his signature song, from his best known album) begs repeated listening. If you are going to own a Lee Morgan album, this would be my first choice. 3 people found this helpful.

Morgan’s 1963 album The Sidewinder had been a huge commercial and financial success, which almost single-handedly helped keep Blue Note solvent, for a while at least. Blue Note then hedged their bets. In the mean time, Cornbread and other more mainstream Morgan recordings for Blue Note remained unreleased, piling up in the Blue Note vaults. This hiatus left behind a rich seam of Lee Morgan-led material recorded between 1963 and 1967, which would be mined first by Liberty, and later, curated by Michael Cuscuna for United Artists for the Blue Note Classics LT series, with many rarely seen alternative cover issues in Japan (more on which anon)
