Gorgoroth - Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam (2006).

Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam is the seventh studio album by Norwegian black metal band Gorgoroth. It was released in June 2006 through Regain Records, and was nominated for Norway's 2006 Spellemann award in the 'Metal' category. This was the only Gorgoroth album where all of the lyrics and music were written by Gaahl and King ov Hell, and was the last to feature both members. Musicians: Gaahl – vocals Infernus – guitars King ov Hell – bass Frost – drums (session).

Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam has been an album I've been looking foward to, as Gorgoroth is in my opinion one of the best Norwegian BM bands still playing in a pure artistic way. Their albums since Destroyer have indeed been taken by many in very different lights. Some hated them, some loved them. Personally I think Incipit Satan had some of their best and most experimental tracks and while Twilight of the Idols seemed to not be over all as inviting, the dark dungeon atmosphere contained on it, combined with more thrashy riffs was in the end a very pleasing record.

When Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam was released in the United States during the summer of 2006, Norway's infamous Gorgoroth was experiencing considerable turmoil. Lead singer Gaahl was serving time in a Norwegian prison for severely beating a man in 2002 and threatening to drink his blood; founder/guitarist Infernus was looking at possible incarceration for, Norwegian prosecutors alleged, doing nothing to stop a rape that a friend allegedly committed in his presence; and longtime bassist King Ov Hell had left the band.

Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam (2006) by Gorgoroth. Labels: Regain Records. Genres: Black Metal Members: Gaahl, Infernus, King, Frost.

Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam was officially Gorgoroth’s 3rd album in the new century, and yet when you hear it you know that it is still full on, balls-to-the-wall black metal. It’s not a fusion genre, like blackened death, or symphonic black, blackened doom, doomed black, or anything of that nature. Not that there’s anything wrong with those subgenres, but it just shows that a strong genre like black metal can still exist and thrive well in the midst of a changing environment.

Gorgoroth's seventh full length studio album, Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam, marks their turn towards the death metal genre. That is not to say however, that the days of having the Gorgoroth we all know and love (you know, the guys that slaughtered a live sheep onstage in Poland") are gone, they've just evolved into something more than your everyday, low production black metal band. Speaking of the production, it's suprisingly good on the album, for the most part. All of the instruments sound as though they were actually mixed and mastered.
