Giant Steps ‎(LP, Album, RE, RP, Bar). The title track is a great example of how tight one band can be. The tempo is fast and Coltrane never lets up the whole time. The whole album is like this and the bonus tracks offer a little bit of variation with an extra solo on the Countdown one. I'd still rather get the LP though. If anyone is new to Coltrane and Hard Bop look no further. This was when he was just hitting his prime and becoming a true leader, in my opinion. Reply Notify me 2 Helpful.

Giant Steps is the fifth studio album by jazz musician John Coltrane as leader, released in 1960 on Atlantic Records, catalogue SD 1311. His first album for his new label Atlantic, it is the breakthrough album for Coltrane as a leader, and many of its tracks have become practice templates for jazz saxophonists. Arguably the first of John Coltrane's great album masterpieces, 1960’s Giant Steps hardly came out of nowhere, as this four-disc set clearly shows

Giant Steps bore the double-edged sword of furthering the cause of the music as well as delivering it to an increasingly mainstream audience. The pinnacle of bebop - this album took harmonic experimentation to new heights. I mean, Giant Steps itself invented a whole new type of chord changes, which dance the tonic around the Circle of Fifths in a demented waltz. To anyone looking to get into jazz, I highly recommend this record.
