The pianist begins the trio with his right hand playing a simple melody, then stops abruptly. l always assumed this was the spot where Schubert clutched his chest dramatically, and fell off the piano bench. I know Schubert lived six more years, but I like my story better). - Jonathan Nott has a less imaginative solution: the orchestra plays Schubert's surviving orchestration (29 seconds) and nothing else. But I really don't need another Entr'acte from Rosamunde, so I am going to limit this discussion to eight performances of the scherzo. I find the scherzo quite attractive, but it's jarring after the serene end of the second movement of the symphony. On it's own the scherzo would make a great concert opener.

A scherzo, nearly completed in piano score but with only two pages orchestrated, also survives.
