BINAURAL was the first Pearl Jam album not to go platinum. It sounds to me like a breakthrough to a higher level of musical realization following the band's escape from grunge (NO CODE) and initial forays into the broader sonic terrain they discovered (YIELD). There are moments when you wish Eddide Vedder would ennunciate better, but it does blend in well with the songs. Breakerfall" is a knockout song, and "Thin Air" is one of the best songs I think they've done in years. This is one intense album. One person found this helpful.

When Pearl Jam began working on their sixth album, ‘Binaural,’ in 1999, they went in with a different set of priorities. For starters, they weren’t using producer Brendan O’Brien, who helped shape every Pearl Jam album since their second, 1993’s ‘V. Instead, they recruited Tchad Blake, best known for the textured soundscapes he applied to records by Los Lobos and Tom Waits, to co-produce with them. If anything, Pearl Jam was even more in the wilderness - at least as far as the mainstream was concerned - at the beginning of 2000 than they were in the second half of the '90s. Even with "Last Kiss," their first big hit single since Ten, under their belts, they were an anomaly on the pop and rock scenes.
