Before his international acclaim as a pop vocalist, Nathaniel Adams Coles built an indelible reputation as a jazz pianist in the groundbreaking combo, The King Cole Trio.

These were Cole's debut recordings. Originally recorded and released in sets of 78 . records between 1944–49, they were reissued in 1950 on 10-inch LPs. The original releases of Volume 3 (as 78 . record album) and Volume 4 (as 78 . m record album and as 45 . record box set) only contained 6 songs (3 records per set).
