Begone Dull Care is a 1949 visual music animated film directed by Norman McLaren and Evelyn Lambart. Using drawn-on-film animation, McLaren and Lambart paint and scratch directly onto film stock to create a visual representation of Oscar Peterson's jazz music. The film is produced by the National Film Board of Canada.

While Junior Boys have been making beautiful electro-pop since 1999, this marks only the duo’s second album with its current lineup: original member Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus. The pair’s So This Is Goodbye was shortlisted for the 2007 Polaris Music Prize, and the Boys parlay this momentum into the keenly polished Begone Dull Care.

Junior Boys' sophomore LP, So This Is Goodbye, dropped two years later with a more traditional sound rooted in classy 1980s electro-funk, trading Last Exit's pinprick jolts of joy for the languid sadness of guys in sharp suits. Commercially, it seems to have been a canny move; a Carl Craig remix of "Like a Child" even brought an improbable Grammy nod. While So This Is Goodbye hardly troubled the Billboard Hot 100, it (deservedly) received some of the attention denied the acclaimed but under-heard Last Exit. So when I call Begone Dull Care a "mature" album, know it skirts both the positive and negative connotations of one of the most divisive adjectives in pop's lexicon.

Begone Dull Care in comparison could be a Morrissey lament, and lends the tracks gathered here a kind of miserable-prince regality, like Des Esseintes with an 808. The title is an homage to an abstract film by the Canadian animator Norman MacLaren, whose methods of painting directly on celluloid predate works by more well-known practitioners like Stan Brakhage. The (comparative) sonic thaw doesn't mean Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus have let their inventiveness dull, though: Begone Dull Care is edgy and technoid, as forward-thinking in its own way as its predecessors were.
