La Susanna, a late oratorio composed in Genoa in 1681, the year before the composer’s death. La Susanna belongs to a popular 17th-century sub-genre termed oratorio erotico because it employed biblical stories concerned with love or the sensual aspect of women. The concept was a mark of counter-Reformation propaganda and stories such as those of Judith or Susanna were popular not only in music, but also literature and painting.

La Susanna - Marjanne Kweksilber, Judith Nelson, René Jacobs, Martyn Hill and Ulrik Cold. Alan Curtis (conductor) 1978. La Susanna - Emanuela Galli, Susanna (soprano) Barbara Zanichelli, Daniele (soprano) Roberto Balconi, Testo (countertenor) Luca Dordolo, Secondo Giudice (tenor) Matteo Bellotto, Primo Giudice (bass) Ensemble Aurora Enrico Gatti, Glossa 2004.

The album included the following session artists: Alto Vocals.

DDD BRILLIANT CLASSICS 94345 Stradella was born in Rome and at an early age must have become acquainted with the oratorio genre. Such works were frequently performed in Rome, and found their origin in the Congregazione dell'Oratorio, which was founded in the 16th century by Filippo Neri. His soloists - Marjanne Kweksilber, Judith Nelson, René Jacobs, Martyn Hill and Ulrik Cold - were top of the bill in early music at the time. Even so, this is a very respectable and enjoyable recording.
