Sviatoslav Richter's 1958 recital recording here of Pictures at an Exhibition is worth the price of admission alone: simply put, it's a classic that has all too often fallen out of print. The performance makes this double-CD volume in Philips's Great Pianists of the 20th Century series one of the most enthralling in the catalogue. The Russian's power throughout the Pictures is truly infectious. The Market-Place at Limoges" tickles the listener with bustling energy, while "The Great Gate of Kiev" is at its most riveting in the thunderous hands of Richter. The third movement of Prokofiev's Seventh Sonata chugs like a locomotive at full speed and with the types of deft touches that a jazz musician would provide.

Notably missing was the towering pianist Sviatoslav Richter, an artist of, in the best sense, demonic powers, whose performances combined stunning technique, myriad colorings and fierce integrity. The Richter/Chicago Brahms Second Concerto is one of the greatest recordings of the century. Though at the time I was in grade school on Long Island, I knew these concerts were taking place and later bought some of the live recordings that were issued, including a two-LP album of Richter’s New York debut program: five Beethoven sonatas, ending with the Appassionata. That high-tension Appassionata stunned me as a child and still does. In the subdued, mysterious opening of the first movement, Richter plays with bold spaciousness.

Richter was known as a pianist of transcendent abilities, particularly adept at highlighting the nuances of different style. Great Pianists of the 20th Century: Sviatoslav Richter, Vol. 2: Beethoven.

Sviatoslav Richter (piano), Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra, Wiener Symphoniker, Witold Rowicki, Stanislaw Wislocki, Herbert von Karajan, Kurt Sanderling. Sviatoslav Richter represents the summit of pianistic achievement: his incredible virtuosity and strength, his vision of structure and form, the range of emotion he was able to express on his instrument in concert and on disc have never been surpassed. Now, for the first time, all nine of the solo and concerto LP-recordings he made for Deutsche Grammophon have been gathered into a single box-set at budget price. All of these recordings have been in the DG catalogue since they were made; if they’re not still at top price, they’re in The Originals series.

Sviatoslav Richter, born 100 years ago in Ukraine, is considered one of the world's greatest pianists. Sony Music Photo Archives. It was in Carnegie Hall and Sviatoslav Richter was playing the piano. The floor rumbled and the walls shook. It happened during the tumultuous passage in double octaves that opens the fugato in Liszt's Sonata in B minor. I had fallen in love with the pianist five years earlier when I was 16. I knew he could make the earth move. Richter, who was born 100 years ago on March 20, 1915, was the greatest pianist I ever heard. I attended 13 of his recitals during his American tours in 1960, 1965 and 1970. Although he never returned to the United States and though I never had the chance to hear him perform again, he remains the pianist I love most dearly.
