Album · 2008 · 22 Songs. Rachmaniñov: Piaño Concerto No. 3.
Incredibly, the last public recital given by Vladimir Horowitz, the pianist many critics call the greatest of the twentieth century, was recorded but never released. North German Radio recorded Horowitz 's June 21, 1987, recital in Hamburg's Musikhalle, but the recording remained nearly untouched until Deutsche Grammophon released it in 2008. For dedicated Horowitz fans, this will be all they need to know. Eighty three years old and increasingly frail, this Horowitz is not the thundering virtuoso of earlier years.
Only 5 left in stock (more on the way). On those grounds, his last recital from a rainy Sunday in June 1987 in Hamburg offers some moving moments. Parts of Kinderszene, the Chopin Mazurka, and the opening Mozart Rondo lifted my spirits. The Polonaise is best forgotten; it is punchy and lacking in passion.
This Hamburg recital was the last concert Horowitz ever gave. It was preceded by appearances in some of the most prestigious concert halls of Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Berlin (Philharmonie) and Vienna (Musikverein), and it put an end to some six decades of concertizing. Horowitz continued to record almost until his death in November 1989, and even considered another European tour, but he never again appeared in public. Casual Horowitz listeners have indeed little business acquiring this album, but Horowitz fans are grateful to the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) and Deutsche Grammophon (DG) for having recorded and released, respectively, this gem of a piano recital.

The Schubert/Liszt Valse-Caprice splits the difference between Horowitz’s solid, ever-so-slightly cautious studio version and the more volatile performance from the historic 1986 Moscow concert. His own conclusion, of course, delights as much as his revamped ending to Moszkowski’s Etincelles. Although Horowitz always garnished Schumann’s Kinderszenen with affetuoso gestures, the Hamburg reading is far superior to the overly mannered caricature from five years earlier, preserved on Horowitz in London (RCA). In 1987, Vladimir Horowitz, the last of the keyboard titans of the 20th century, made a triumphant European tour, giving what turned out to be his final series of performances before an adoring public. The very last of these concerts, on June 21 in Hamburg, was recorded by the North German Radio. Apart from a single encore, no part of this valedictory concert has ever been issued before. This recording constitutes a unique souvenir of Horowitz's final public appearance, where the sense of occasion and immediacy is palpable
