A double album (or double record) is an audio album which spans two units of the primary medium in which it is sold, typically records and compact disc. A double album is usually, though not always, released as such because the recording is longer than the capacity of the medium.

EP or Extended Play of those years also played the role of small compilations of already released singles. Less often were independent mini-albums with new material. In 1980, Malcolm McLaren convinced EMI to release the debut single of his new band Bow Wow on audio cassette, which became a precedent. The format of the modern album was possible thanks to the creation of the LP format. While the term LP has been transformed over time to include any music release that is a full-length album, the term was originally used to describe a specific type of record: the 12-inch, 33 1/3 RPM (revolutions per minute)) album of vinyl records. Another subset of the EP is the double EP, which can be a pair of 7 inches, 10 inches, or 12-inch records.
An extended play record, often referred to as an EP, is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP. EPs generally do not contain as many tracks as albums, and are considered "less expensive and time-consuming" for an artist to produce than an album. An EP originally referred to specific types of vinyl records other than 78 rpm standard play (SP) and LP, but it is now applied to mid-length CDs and downloads as well. A double extended play is the name typically given to vinyl records or compact discs released as a set of two discs, each of which would normally qualify as an EP. The name is thus analogous to double album. As vinyl records, the most common format for the double EP, they consist of a pair of 7" discs recorded at 45 or 33 1⁄3rpm, or two 12" discs recorded at 45 rpm.
