Description

Don Thompson Quartet.

Don Thompson Quartet - Cheese Blintzes Burlesque A Go Go, 2009 02:15.

Donald Winston Thompson, OC (born 18 January 1940) is a Canadian jazz musician who plays double bass, piano, and vibes. Thompson formed part of the Toronto Quartet of Paul Desmond during the mid seventies, and that effort produced two albums. Other personnel on those dates, mostly at Bourbon Street in Toronto, were Toronto guitarist Ed Bickert and drummer Jerry Fuller. Thompson has been a fixture on the Toronto jazz scene since the late 1960s when he moved there from British Columbia

Thompson took a relatively simplistic, uncluttered approach to the piano, leaving lots of space between the chords. This creates a favorable contrast with the sometimes busy sax of Byas. The result is more than an hour of solid quartet playing from two of jazz history's more neglected figures. Don Byas seems destined to forever be known as an artist who deserved greater recognition. This reissue by Denmark's Storyville label should help move the tenor sax player away from that unflattering categorization.

Notes

From back cover:
Don Thompson, Canadian jazzman. Unlike many from the same country who, despite their talent, have remained unknown during their lifetime, DON has made a genuine international name for himself. For what a jazzman! He's a solid drummer and vibraphonist, a first-rate bassist, but says he'd rather play piano, adding: "I think like a horn player whenever I play anything. When I play piano, I don't think of it as a piano. I never think as a bass player...my main influences in jazz are different horn players, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles...".
DON spends much of his time in Toronto clubs, often accompanying visiting American jazz artists. He occasionally repays these visits, especially to Jim Hall in New York who turned Paul Desmond on to him. DON has recorded with both men.
This particular album features DON as leader (and composer), the third time he has recorded in that capacity for Radio Canada International. He is heard here with three musicians who are among the best around. Bassist RICK HOMME is currently with the Moe Koffman Quintet, and the last ten years have seen him in groups led by the likes of Ted Moses, Alvinn Pall and Sonny Greenwich. Saxophonist MICHAEL STUART has blown everything from ska, reggae and rock to fine jazz that shows the twin influences of Coltrane and Marcel Mule. He has worked recently with Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner. CLAUDE RANGER has written a text book for drummers, but he's an exception to the rule that "those who can't, teach". RANGER's name and sound have been an essential part of Canadian jazz life for over a decade. DON THOMPSON, RICK HOMME, MICHAEL STUART, CLAUDE RANGER - Canadian jazzmen. And what jazzmen!
Recorded Convocation Hall of McMaster University, Sept. 1977
