My main aim for Minute Bodies – The intimate world of F. Percy Smith is that it invites Smiths work to breath and exist in the present.

Smith worked in the early years of the 20th century, developing various cinematographic and micro-photographic techniques to capture nature’s secrets in action. Working in a number of public roles, including the Royal Navy and British Instructional Films, Smith was prolific and driven, often directing several films simultaneously, apparently on a mission to explore and capture nature’s hidden terrains

Scientist F. Percy Smith pioneered micro-cinema -building his own equipment for time-lapse photography and other techniques to film plants and organisms at a microscopic level. Weaving together Smith’s black-and-white found footage from the 1920s and ’30s, with the accompaniment of a new score by Tindersticks, director (and Tindersticks frontman) Stuart A. I love the fact that Percy would never have had an inkling that his work might be viewed as art, Staples says. Hopefully, people will see the film and come away with a sense of this man’s commitment to his work and his voyage of discovery. I just hope it gives him the recognition that he deserves.
