And now we come to Volume II, the 2nd, 9th, and 11th quartets. The Second, of course, is from the mid-1940s and is in the style we're familiar with from his famous 'Rounds' for string orchestra. In three movements, it includes a flowing allegro, a grave and tuneful adagio that uses masterful counterpoint to reach several intense climaxes, and a playful, bustling finale that caps it all off.

Everything in the four CD series of the complete David Diamond (2)'s string quartets released by Albany Records is excellent. In first place, the music: this is one of the most important string quartet cycles from the 20th century, arguably the finest by a US composer. The set of these works is very consistent, the composer having been able to take his own path, almost always on a basis that conveys an essentially tonal feeling without, however, ceasing to use serial processes (although the used series are mostly incomplete), as well as using elements of dissonance and atonality. Also, the author was receptive to the influence of the tradition in this field (especially Beethoven), which manifests, and is explicitly assumed, in formal aspects such as, for example, the fugue (used mainly in the final movements of the works). In short, these works constitute an accomplished synthesis, where the personality of the composer is well showed. Then the performers: the Potomac String Quartet was a revelation to me. The musicians proved to be technically irreproachable and cohesive in the interpretation, something assumed as fundamental in the hard discipline of the string quartet. Finally, the recording is of high quality: beautiful presence and transparency, qualities reinforced by the use of the HDCD technique. And the edition is accompanied by relevant texts, in part interviews with the composer which greatly illuminate the understanding of the works and their context.
