Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15, Composed by Johannes Brahms. Glenn Gould, pianist. Leonard Bernstein, conductor
Leonard Bernstein worshipped pianist Glenn Gould, but he didn’t always agree with his interpretations. This remarkable performance was one such time, with Bernstein announcing his objections to Gould’s eccentric tempos and general liberties with the score to the 1962 New York audience. Bernstein may or may not have made the right diplomatic decision, but Gould’s speeds do go against the grain: The lengthy first movement and normally sprightly third are each around two minutes slower than conventional performances, while the Adagio is a good deal faster

The Piano Concerto No. 15, is a work for piano and orchestra completed by Johannes Brahms in 1858. The composer gave the work's public debut in Hanover, the following year. It was his first-performed orchestral work, and (in its third performance) his first orchestral work performed to audience approval. This concerto is written in the traditional three movements and is approximately 40 to 50 minutes long. 1 in C Major, Op. 15: II. 3. 30. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 15: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. Adagio. by Leonard Bernstein. I'm not sure if this 1962 live recording of Brahms's mighty Piano Concerto No. 1 helps support my conclusions about Bernstein's added vitality in the concert hall compared to the studio, however, as right off we have Bernstein's pre-performance pronouncement that this performance will have significantly broader tempi, yielding to the wishes of his soloist, Glenn Gould. Glenn Gould and Leonard Bernstein's famed performance of the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor is well worth the experience.
