The four singers here are Miss Esham, Irene Gubrud, Lucy Shelton and Jan Opalach. That means three sopranos and one baritone, which is hardly an ideal complement to present a real overview of Griffes's achievement as a song-writer. But all four singers handle themselves well individually. The least successful is the usually admirable Miss Shelton, who sounds here rather effortful of production in a way that doesn't suit the conversatinal intimacies of lieder-singer very aptly. Still, even here her tone remains bright and appealing, and the other three are unqualifiedly first-rate
