Timo Tolkki is the mainman, main songwriter and guitar player of one of the most successful heavy metal bands today. Here’s what Timo says about his new output: It was recorded in a place called Hästholmen, not a studio, but a house by the sea near Helsinki where I brought my recording gear. I also wrote the songs there. I was there basically from February to June 2001, and then from August to September and then mixed the album at Finnvox studios. Anssi Nykänen, a top Finnish session drummer played the drums, Mika Ervaskari (original Stratovarius keyboarder from 85-87) played the keys, Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween) sang Key to the Universe, Sharon Den Adel (Within Temptation) sang Are You the One? I sang.

The technological basis of his invention was the method of graphical sound recording used in cinematography (developed in Russia concurrently with USA), which made it possible to obtain a visible image of a sound wave, as well as to realize the opposite goal-synthesizing a sound from an artificially drawn sound spectrogram. An album of works by the composers mentioned above, called "Musical Offering" was released on Melodiya (C60 30721 000) in 1990-although the recordings date from the 1960s and 1970s.

Hymn to Life is the second solo album by Timo Tolkki. Unlike the first one, Classical Variations and Themes, Hymn to Life does not present Tolkki as a fast and classical heavy metal guitarist, but as a diverse songwriter. The album deals with Tolkki's personal beliefs and thoughts about life and encourages the listener to believe in him/herself. Despite some song names, Tolkki uses strong criticism against religions.
