With The Fairy Queen, Sébastien d’Hérin and Les Nouveaux Caractères set down on record their musical vision of one of Henry Purcell’s most compelling dramatic works. The 1692/1693 work dates from around half a century before two other Baroque scores which Les Nouveaux Caractères has tackled recently and received significant critical approval: Leclair’s Scylla et Glaucus and Rameau’s Les Surprises de l’Amour (the latter, like The Fairy Queen, appearing on Glossa)

Air Henry Purcell; Les Nouveaux Caractères; Sébastien d'Hérin. 4. Rondeau Henry Purcell; Les Nouveaux Caractères; Sébastien d'Hérin. 5. Overture Henry Purcell; Les Nouveaux Caractères; Sébastien d'Hérin. 6. Act I "The Palace of the Duke". First performed in 1692 at the Queen's Theatre in Dorset Garden, The Fairy Queen is a loose adaptation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and combines both spoken and sung sections: most of Purcell's music was conceived to accompany the several masques that occur throughout the production. The result of a decade-long development period, this recording from Les Nouveaux Caractères is rich and vibrant and relishes the unexpected twists and turns of this fine example of Restoration era entertainment. 96 kHz, 24-bit PCM – Glossa Studio Masters.

This is evident from the very start, with a striking but pointless non-Purcell flourish of timpani before the start of the first Prelude followed by an arresting rendition of the first few instrumental numbers.
