The hit "Do Anything You Wanna Do" is the highlight, of course, but its still considerable impact is ultimately nullified by the succession of other cuts in a similar mold, which dignified Life on the Line but utterly hamstringed Thriller. In their original surroundings, you could forgive the band for throwing in the occasional transparent power pop gems. But when they just fly at you relentlessly, it doesn't only start getting tiresome, it also gets harder to tell them apart. Indeed, the still sublime "Quit This Town" notwithstanding, there's very little about this album that makes you want to race out and hear more of the group. Which isn't simply a shameful failing, it's tantamount to musical treason.

A disc longer than that 1994 CD, Do Anything You Wanna Do digs deeper, offering a few more album tracks, a few more live cuts, and a few more singles, and even if it doesn't offer anything revelatory, what's here is all good and all from the band's peak. Anybody satisfied with The End of the Beginning doesn't need to seek this out, but anybody in the market for an Eddie & the Hot Rods compilation should consider this.

Eddie and the Hot Rods are a pub rock band from Essex founded in 1975. They are best known for their 1977 UK top ten hit "Do Anything You Wanna Do", released under the name The Rods. The group broke up in 1981, but have reformed several times since, with singer Barrie Masters the only constant member. The band was formed in Canvey Island during 1975 by guitarist Dave Higgs (who had previously played in the Fix with Lee Brilleaux), with drummer Steve Nicol, bassist Rob Steele, and singer Barrie Masters.
