Percy William Whitlock (1 June 1903, Chatham, Kent – 1 May 1946, Bournemouth) was an English organist and composer for his instrument. A student of Vaughan Williams at London's Royal College of Music, Whitlock quickly arrived at an idiom which combined elements of his teacher's output and that of Elgar. The result was immediately striking, particularly since his lush harmonic style also bore traces of Gershwin and other popular composers of the 1920s. Like Vaughan Williams and Delius, he often used themes that sounded like folksongs but were, in fact, original creations.
William M. "Billy" Whitlock (1813–1878) was an American blackface performer. He began his career in entertainment doing blackface banjo routines in circuses and dime shows, and by 1843, he was well known in New York City. He is best known for his role in forming the original minstrel troupe, the Virginia Minstrels. Whitlock was born in New York City in 1813. He worked as a typesetter for a religious journal, then went to work for the New York Herald.
This is pretty much how Larry Nugent plays it on his second album, two for two. great e dorian jig. there is more info about the tune in the liner notes, but i don’t have the cd on me at the moment. Posted by Brendan 14 years ago. according to the liner notes, Larry got this from a recording of the Pride of Erin ceili band, which was led by Larry’s father, Sean Nugent. The Pride of Erin ~ source, Member: concertinaplayer. The Pride of Erin ~ A Dorian and other options. Thanks to concertinaplayer for the reminder. I first heard and learned this tune from "The Pride of Erin Ceilidh Band" lot, including the Nugents, fine musicians, instrumentalists and singers, and dancers too ~ in their lot, great characters and generous heart. ere it is up higher in another key, A Dorian, and with some other ways I’ve been remembering.
