Awaken, the band’s fourth album, naturally expands on the proficient interplay of the aforementioned subgenres that Rites of Separation skilfully established previously. Now, Agrimonia focusses on emphasising and perfecting their knack for creating progressive soundscapes without surrendering their vicious edge. Not only does Awaken successfully combine these various sounds as well as maintaining the continuously ominous tone that the combined genres produce, but, within these lengthy compositions they frequently glide from movement to movement. Consequently, Awaken is never still.

New album Awaken naturally expands upon the complementary interplay between crystalline post-metal, rampaging crustpunk and black metal, which made their previous album so engaging. On Astray and The Sparrow, Agrimonia’s adventurous musicianship even displays an Opeth-ian grandeur, and yet, such progressive nous is never at the expense of their extreme edge – mostly because of Christina Blom’s raw, dominant screams and some punishing riff progressions.

The six songs on Awaken are outstanding, with nary a throwaway track. Agrimonia have crafted an album that surpasses genre labels. The crust and sludge from earlier days is almost a distant memory. What the band has evolved into has crystallized into a fantastically played and written slab of metal littered with influences but beholden to none.

We have been waiting for 10 years and finally, on January 26, 2018, Agrimonia return with a brand-new album. Awake is their fourth release and the second for Southern Lord. The band has evolved notably over this period. Their sound has always been dense, immersive – ambitious, even – and on Awake, the band has evolved their prog-infused form of expansive metal into something energetic, dynamic and powerful.

Awaken, then, is a manifold improvement. Riffs run the gamut here. There is no grand restructuring or reinventing that occurs, and yet they chime in with something vital that was sort of missed out on in the earlier release - a thoroughly enveloping sense of atmosphere, which is here the figurehead, omniscient and yet never overbearing. On the other hand, as an album with a clearly formed aesthetic it has becomes its creators’ namesake, the herb Agrimonia of yore. Entrancing and healing in quality, and yet strong enough to induce a state of wakefulness. Bleak and winding it may be, yet hope ever lingers in this conjuration.
