Cornelius "Johnny" Hodges (July 25, 1907 – May 11, 1970) was an American alto saxophonist, best known for solo work with Duke Ellington's big band. He played lead alto in the saxophone section for many years. Hodges was also featured on soprano saxophone, but refused to play soprano after 1946. He is considered one of the definitive alto saxophone players of the big band era (along with Benny Carter).

CASTLE ROCK Hodges first album under his own name after leaving the Duke for a period during the early fifties, the band features Emmett Berry or Nelson Williams on trumpet, Leroy Lovett on piano, and Lloyd Trotman or or Al McKibben on bass. Ellintonians Lawrence Brown on trombone, Al Sears on tenor sax, Sonny Greer on drums, and on one cut, Billy Strayhorn on piano round out the groups. I find it the most interesting of the four albums. Johnny seems excited with his new role, and plays with exceptional vigor on the faster tunes
